A full day! Actually set my alarm for seven am, Sumana wanted to get to the Na Na jungle early so she could, once again, see the Thai people pick a number and line up for bread. She says she never thought she would see the day!
Well, we missed the early start because now they start even earlier..... the Na Na jungle is a community of expats and farangs, most of whom are married to Thais. They set up a Saturday morning market and sell all kinds of stuff but mostly food products - everything from lasagna to macadamian pesto.

Equal to if not better than any I have had in France!
We met Pam and Sivalee at the market. Pam,who I met in Toronto years ago, works as an addiction therapist in a Burmese Refugee Camp about three hours north of here. She spends six months here doing that then returns to the Stratford area for six months and runs her certified organic farm! Busy lady! Sivalee is a nurse and teaches acupuncture, massage and reakie.....they use acupuncture to help the refugees with their addictions.

From the Na Na Jungle we took a trip out to the Chaing Mai Grand Canyon, a man made quarry turned into a pool party. It has only been open a year or two but is a welcome retreat from the heat here for the locals and tourists alike. If the owners had ever been to Caledon they would have named it the Badlands. |
Had lunch here, which was good then Pam, Sumana and I returned to Sumanas to rest up for the night market while Sivalee went to a business meeting. We did not get much rest as Pam had forgotten that she needed to pick her passport up at the travel agent by 5:30. She was getting a visa in it for Burma. So, off we went and the traffic was a nightmare, reminded me of Bangkok traffic. Chaing Mai has grown exponentially since the last time I was here. hardly recognize the place to be honest. Of course we were late but they waited for her and it all turned out. Eventually we found parking - not an easy feat and entered the market. It seemed to go on forever and we probably covered a third of it before we decided to call it a day/night!

Looks like gummy worms in milk ...did not try it! |
|
Quail eggs , selling like hot cakes! |
|
Every kind of sausage you can imagine |
|
Twice a day they play the National Anthem over a loud speaker and everything stops. |
|
A very serious pad thai chef! |
|
Popsicles made by hand |
|
more meat ...note the cowboy hat on the vendor! |
You would think the night market was all about food when it really wasn't but it was just stall after stall of scarves, hill tribe stuff and tourist trinkets....did not buy a thing.
Sumanas side garden of orchids, Pam getting ready to go to the market!
Off and trotting in the fast lane!
